Senator Hutchison Urges Thorough GAO Analysis of DOD Quadrennial Defense Review

WASHINGTON, DC - In an effort to ensure the most efficient and effective restructuring of the U.S. Military, U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) today urged the GAO to conduct a thorough analysis of the Department of Defense’s four-year review.

“The DOD Quadrennial Defense Review will analyze our strategic military objectives and identify potential threats going forward,” Sen. Hutchison said. “This review could lead to more servicemen and women being reassigned from overseas bases to U.S. installations, providing a better quality of life for many military families and better training for our armed forces. I urge the GAO to assist Congress in evaluating this important report to make sure our military resources are being allocated as efficiently and effectively as possible.”

Senator Hutchison is the Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies. She joined with Senator Tim Johnson (D-ID), Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies, to write a letter to Comptroller General Dodaro. The letter highlights the Senator’s concerns about the true costs of maintaining our overseas military presence.

Senator Hutchison has been a leading advocate of reducing our military presence overseas and returning troops to installations in the United States, such as Fort Bliss and Fort Hood.

Military installations in the U.S. provide far better training opportunities for our military with greater access to modern ranges and large-scale maneuver areas. In addition, U.S. installations offer a much higher quality of life for military personnel and their families in terms of housing, medical care, and education than what is normally available to our military at overseas bases.
